US senator Sanders, alongside representative Elijah Cummings has been planning to introduce a legislation on Thursday, the 10th of January, 2019, to curb the cost of US prescription drugs. Democrats had remained vigilant to the efforts of Trump administration on bringing down the US prescription drugs and it was in Donald Trump’s election campaign agenda.
However, an independent Sanders, who caucuses for the democrats and Rep. Cumming had said on their proposal that the Trump administration did not do enough to help the Americans. The proposed legislation has several co-sponsors among the Democrats in US house of Representatives and in the Republican led senate, as Sanders said in a statement, “The United States pays by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs.
If the pharmaceutical industry will not end its greed, which is literally killing Americans, then we will end it for them.” In 2018, the US department of Health and Human Services had orchestrated a plan to reduce the Prescription drug prices and they have initiated several proposals for curbing the cost of medicines, while Trump had also expressed his frustration over continued price hike by the drug makers despite initiatives from US department of Health & Human service. As a response to escalating pressure from the policymakers, most of the US drug manufacturers had ended their practice of double-digit price hike.
