The picturesque coastal town of Half Moon Bay, located 50 kilometers south of San Francisco, was thrust into the national spotlight on Tuesday following a devastating workplace shooting that left seven people dead and one injured.
According to local authorities, the shootings occurred at two separate farms, one of which was a mushroom farm, and were carried out by the same individual who was subsequently taken into custody. Video footage released by ABC 7 shows the arrest, in which the suspect is seen being ordered out of his car at gunpoint by plainclothes and uniformed officers before being searched and taken into custody.
Sheriff Christina Corpus, who addressed the press in the aftermath of the tragedy, stated that “all of the evidence we have points to this being the instance of workplace violence. The only known connection between the victims and the suspect is that they may have been coworkers”.
The semi-automatic handgun used in the shooting had been legally purchased and owned by the suspect, according to Corpus.
Sheriff Corpus further stated that the evidence points to "workplace violence" as the motive behind the shooting.
The tragic event came just two days after 11 people were killed in a mass shooting in Monterey Park. US President Joe Biden was informed of the incident and has called on federal law enforcement to provide assistance to local authorities.
Spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre announced on Twitter that the President has also offered his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. "[email protected] has been briefed by the Homeland Security Advisor on the mass shooting in San Mateo County, California.
He has asked federal law enforcement to provide any necessary assistance to the local authorities. As more details become available, the President will be updated."
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community and the nation, as another senseless act of gun violence takes place on American soil.
