Tensions in the Middle East have reached a boiling point amid the worst relations between Iran and Israel we have seen in the 21st century. Members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized the cargo ship MSC Aries near the Strait of Hormuz, which they said was linked to Israel.

in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian state media, the ship has been identified as Israeli, although it sails under the Portuguese flag. The seizure was carried out with a dramatic helicopter design.

A special unit of the IRGC descended on the ship's deck by helicopter and took control of the vessel. Iran's state agency IRNA announced that the ship is currently being transferred to Iranian territorial waters as reported by Reuters.

Israeli media, specifically the Times of Israel, claim that the seized ship is linked to Zodiac Martime, a London-based shipping company that belongs to the Zodiac Group of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer. The seizure is the latest incident in a series of escalations between Iran and Israel, and fears of a regional war are higher than ever.

Israeli intelligence services are on high alert for a possible Iranian response to the recent Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. That attack killed at least 12 people, including a senior IRGC general.

The Israeli military carefully avoided commenting on the incident, but promised a "decisive response" to any Iranian aggression. Iran, which is Israel's sworn enemy and an ally of the Palestinian Hamas, has threatened to "punish" Israel.

The United States is also monitoring the situation with great concern. US intelligence reports indicate that Iran is considering attacks on multiple sites in Israel and the wider region in retaliation for the attack on the consulate.

The United States called on all parties to exercise restraint and open diplomatic channels to avoid open conflict. US President Joe Biden has been briefed repeatedly by his national security team and the US intends to do "everything possible to ensure that Israel can defend itself", said John Kirby, a White House spokesman.

"It would be reckless not to assess our position in the region, to ensure that we are also properly prepared," he added. The seizure of the cargo ship and potential Iranian retaliation represent a significant worsening of the already volatile situation in the Middle East.

The international community is called for urgent action to de-escalate the situation and prevent the spread of the conflict.
