The Scourge: Vitalik Buterin revealed a new Ethereum phase

With the Scourge, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is working to improve censorship resistance and decentralization in the Ethereum network. This is the next phase in Ethereum's technical roadmap. Ethereum's new network plans were announced by Buterin in a Twitter post on November 5, in which Scourge is introduced in the now expanded technical map, which consists of Merge, Surge, Scourge, Verge, Purgea, and Splurge.

Ethereum is currently in its second phase - Surge - aiming to reach 100,000 transactions per second through bulk transactions following its switch to a proof-of-stake (PoS) network on September 15.

The third stage will be the implementation of Scourge

After Verge, Purge, and Splurge, Scourge will be implemented as the third stage of the updated tech map.

As per the Ethereum Roadmap, Scourge aims to avoid centralization and other protocol risks brought by MEV by ensuring reliable, credible, and neutral transaction inclusion. Miners have been known to exploit transactions on Ethereum's network in order to gain an advantage, according to the Ethereum co-founder.

In his definition of a credibly neutral mechanism, Buterin meant a mechanism that doesn't discriminate against anyone. By deciding which transactions to block in which order, miners can maximize their Miner Extractable Value (MEV).

The percentage of blocks that have been deemed compliant with the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) after the network switched to PoS reached 73% on November 3rd, a figure that many consider to be excessive. At the moment, Anthony Sassano, the founder of The Daily Gwei YouTube channel, says it is more important to resist censorship than to scale up the channel at the moment.

There have not yet been any full details released about Scourge, but Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently proposed a method called "Partial Block Auction", where the block builder only has the right to decide on a portion of the content contained within a block.

Additionally, Buterin confirmed a new update to Verge, which will now include the integration of Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge (SNARK) technology on the Ethereum platform. By adding SNARKs to Ethereum, the network will be able to preserve privacy while tracking anonymous transactions.
