Italian cyclist with defibrillator after heart attack

A few days ago we told you about Sonny Colbrelli and the heart attack he had during the first stage of the Tour of Catalonia, a couple of weeks ago, when he suffered a collapse immediately after the finish. Sonny returned home after being discharged from the cardiology clinic at the University of Padua, where he had been hospitalized since last Saturday.

The runner underwent a cardiovascular clinical evaluation in the Genetic Cardiomyopathy and Sports Cardiology Unit of the Hospital-University of Padua, an Italian center of excellence for the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmogenic heart disease.

Based on the clinical results, in agreement with the team's medical staff, Colbrelli underwent a successful surgery for the subcutaneous defibrillator implant. Professor Domenico Corrado said: "In Padua, the athlete underwent a complete clinical, genetic and imaging evaluation to identify the cause of the arrhythmia that led to cardiac arrest and the most appropriate therapy.

The decision to implant a device life-saving was shared by Colbrelli who received a subcutaneous ICD. The device works to correct the heart's rhythm if it is needed in extreme cases."

What happened

At the Tour of Catalonia, in Spain, at the arrival of the stage of Sant Felie de Guixols, the Italian cyclist Sonny Colbrelli suffered an illness, probably a heart attack from the first rumors, immediately after crossing the finish line.

Sonny was immediately rescued by an ambulance team following the race: according to what was reported by the Spanish media, the doctors gave him heart massage. In recent weeks, a bronchitis had stopped Colbrelli at the Paris-Nice, while the runner had not taken to the Milan-Sanremo for similar problems.

On Twitter, the Italian cyclist's team wrote: "At the end of the first stage of the Tour of Catalonia. Sonny Colbrelli fell ill and fainted. Immediately rescued, he was transported by ambulance and in stable conditions to the university hospital of Girona for further investigation."

The organizers of the event instead wrote: "Colbrelli lost consciousness and had convulsions, which led to cardiorespiratory arrest. The runner was immediately assisted by paramedics who performed a cardiac massage and with the use of defibrillator they managed to reverse the situation.

The cyclist then stabilized and was taken by ambulance to the hospital." A professional since 2011, Colbrelli, 31, last year experienced a season to be framed, a stage of the Giro del Dauphiné in June, victories in the Italian championship and then in the European one.

Until the most beautiful of his 34 victories, Paris-Roubaix. Team Bahrain-Victorius also said: "After being admitted to the Hospital Universitari de Girona Dr. Josep Trueta, Sonny Colbrelli was conscious and felt good. He has been in contact with family and friends ever since.

Today the cyclist will undergo further tests to find the cause of yesterday's accident. All the cardiac tests carried out last night showed no signs of concern." The Tour of Catalonia was the occasion of the return for Colbrelli, who had stopped a bronchitis at the Paris-Nice before the start of the second stage.

The winner of the Paris-Roubaix of 2021 had then forfeited the Milan-Sanremo, the first great classic of the season won on Saturday by his teammate, the Slovenian Matej Mohoric.
