Egan Bernal; Surgery (after accident) update

Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal, winner of the 2019 Tour de France and current Gira champion, suffered a car accident at a training session in his country on Monday, his team Ineos said. Bernal, 25, was injured in a collision with a bus and ended up with numerous injuries at the hospital in a conscious state.

According to a police statement, Egan Bernal hit the back of the bus, which stopped abruptly. According to the Colombian press, referring to the athletes' relatives, he broke his cup in the knee and femur and will have to undergo surgery.

He underwent surgery today and apparently is in good condition "As the hours have passed, the patient has had an excellent response to treatment and the doses of inotropy have been decreased," hospital gave a statement, as quoted by cyclingnews
"The patient adequately tolerated the extubation protocol without any complications.

At this time, he is conscious, with mobility of all four extremities. "Ventilatory support and inotropic support were monitored and adjusted. In addition to this, antimicrobial and antithrombotic prophylaxis was carried out.

Also, he was given fluid and electrolyte management. The aforementioned includes further advancement in post-operative evolution."

Hospital statement

The hospital gave a further explanation, but it seems that everything will be fine with Egan Bernal "The neurosurgery team carried out a reduction of a displaced fracture from the T5 [vertebra] to the T6 [vertebra] with a traumatic herniated disc," they say..

"Under constant monitoring for nervous system activity, a tool was put in place from the T3 to the T8, maintaining neurological integrity and conserving the functionality of the segments involved."
"The interdisciplinary team will continue its dedication to taking the best care of everything that the patient’s current medical condition entails," the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana said.

We hope that Egan Bernal will return to sports after all, but above all that everything will go well and that in the end the Colombian will be well after all
