US FTC asks for advertising, sales data of e-cigarette companies

On Thursday, the 3rd of October 2019, the US FTC (Federal Trade Commission), an independent agency of the US Government accountable for overseeing consumer protection and enforcements of non-criminal US antitrust laws, had ordered more than six US-based multinational and domestic e-cigarette companies to submit their advertising and sales data, indicating the first move against a flurry of marketing malpractices of e-cigarette companies which had drawn attentions of policymakers from all over the world.

On top of that, according to US FTC’s Thursday’s (October 3rd) announcement to turn over sales and advertising data of the e-cigarette makers and marketers, the order to submit e-cigarette sales and marketing data in the United States was sent to Juul Labs Inc., RJ Reynolds Vapor Co., Fontem US Inc., Logic Technology Development LLC, NJOY LLC and Nu Mark LLC.

In point of fact, latest move of FTC against the e-cigarette makers which would likely to end up in a regulatory crackdown and further probe, was aimed at seeking annual sales and marketing data, data on product flavours and placements alongside the e-cigarette maker’s use of celebrities in internet and college campuses in a bid to promote sales of their electronic smoking device, an FTC official unveiled on Thursday (October 3rd) on condition of anonymity.
