The United States President Donald Trump has called for postponing the country’s presidential election – due to be held in November – citing inaccuracies in mail-in voting. Trump is seeking re-election against the Democrats’ Presidential nominee, and former vice-president, Joe Biden.
Trump, in his customary style, tweeted his thoughts on the subject.
US President Donald Trump calls for postponing November presidential elections
“Mail-In Voting is already proving to be a catastrophic disaster. Even testing areas are way off.
The Dems talk of foreign influence in voting, but they know that Mail-In Voting is an easy way for foreign countries to enter the race. Even beyond that, there’s no accurate count!” Then, in another tweet, he added, “With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history.
It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???” Trump’s tweet read. This is not the first time Trump has voiced his thoughts against mail-in voting.
Most recently, before these tweets, on Wednesday, again on Twitter, Trump posted, “New York Mail-In voting is in a disastrous state of condition. Votes from many weeks ago are missing - a total mess. They have no idea what is going on.
Rigged Election. I told you so. Same thing would happen, but on massive scale, with USA. Fake News refuses to report!” According to Trump, mail-in voting could lead to interference by foreign parties that would, in turn, affect the veracity of the election polls.
Despite his allegations against mail-in voting, the 74-year-old president has never substantiated his concerns with data proofs. However, Trump’s recent call to push the election dates also has other undertones. Earlier, there had been fears that Trump would make an attempt to call off the upcoming elections since he is trailing in the electoral polls’ margin to Biden in double digits.
However, despite Trump’s wanting to postpone the elections, he has no rights to exercise this move with the governing election date laws having been long reinforced by the country’s Congress, in the mid-1800s.
Tweeting about Trump’s lack of decision-making rights on the subject, Michael Beschloss, who is a presidential historian, said, “Never in American history—not even during the Civil War and World War II--has there been a successful move to “Delay the Election” for President”.
Ahead of the 2020 elections, six of the 50 US states are contemplating having ballot elections only via mail. These states are Utah, Washington, Hawaii, California, Oregon, and Colorado. This is in order to counter the widening spread of Covid-19 cases that is currently surging in the country. Donald Trump’s handling of the pandemic has already been a cause of concern for the American people.
