China’s first F1 driver Guanyu Zhou celebrates dream debut with Alfa Romeo

Guanyu Zhou, the first Chinese Formula One driver, has made a dream F1 debut with Alpha Romeo in Bahrain season opener, as the 22-year-old from Shanghai finished with points on his orientation. Zhou already has made a significantly affirmative impression in F1 arena as Alpha Romeo has been lined up fifteenth on the grid after qualifying in the second phase on Saturday.

The first F1 racer from China has concluded at 10th on Sunday. Prior to his latest venture in the F1 track, Zhou drove for UNI-Virtuosi Racing in F2 between 2019 and 2021. He had finished 2021 F2 at third.

Zhou enjoying dream debut at F1

Besides, as Zhou has been enjoying his dream debut in F1, he said in an interview with F1 TV after the season opening Bahrain GP, “It's amazing, I'm so speechless, you know? It was [such an] emotional race, so intense.

To be scoring my first ever Formula One points in my debut is something I would only have dreamed of one year ago or two weeks ago”. While being asked about a string of his spectacular overtaking moves including a turn when he had surpassed Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, Zhou said, “I don't know how that confidence comes.

But I think it's the eagerness that I want to finish in the points”. Besides, addressing that his performance in Bahrain GP had proved the sceptics wrong, Zhou added, “I always said that I deserve to be here and today I think I showed everything," he said.

"It's a great relief. Huge reward for us, and it's a day that I [will] never forget”. Zhou’s Alpha Romeo teammate Bottas finished at sixth, making sure a double-point finish for the team in the first F1 event in the season.
