Aston Martin revealed the reasons for Fernando Alonso's lift and coast order

The decision for Fernando Alonso to lift and coast during the last race in Canada caused different reactions. The Aston Martin team has now revealed after a few days that the main reason for the decision was a fuel system error.

In an interview with the media, Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack revealed why they decided on such a decision. The Aston Martin team is obviously cautious. "We thought we had a problem with the fuel system,” -Krack said, as quoted by crash.net “But we were not sure.

So as a precaution we said the best thing is to save some fuel and to do lift and coast”. Krack is still not sure how much it would cost his team, but the primary goal was arriving, which they succeeded in doing. For them, the most important thing is that they have a great driver like Fernando Alonso on the team.

"How much it costs us? It's difficult to judge. A few tenths, one or two per lap, maybe. It was a precautionary thing. But you can choose between not finishing or arriving with a bit more [fuel], so we wanted to be safe”.

Fernando Alonso reacts to orders

After the race, Fernando Alonso didn't know what it was about, and why the team gave him the order. The Spaniard obeyed the orders, given that he believes in his team. Alonso and Aston Martin are doing great things this season.

“I don't really know,” he said. “They didn't tell me so maybe it was not to make me worry too much. But I don't know. I felt the car was OK. But I was just following the instructions. So yeah, hopefully that means that we have a little bit more pace.

So next one, putting more pressure on Max”. Alonso hopes to put more pressure on Max Verstappen. We will see if he will succeed in that.
