TikTok says that in the coming weeks, some words or hashtags will be able to be put on a 'blacklist', which means that videos with those hashtags will no longer be able to be seen on the main services For You and Following.

After criticism that it allows teenagers to watch inappropriate videos, Tik Tok now gives parents two ways to limit their children's access to adult content. The application introduces two new options, one that allows the banning of certain phrases and hashtags and the other that adjusts the content to the age of the user.

The new features are designed to give users more control over the vast number of videos, all while avoiding unwanted and inappropriate videos being made available to teenagers. Unlike platforms like YouTube and Vimeo, videos on TikTok play automatically.

Until now, it was common for users as young as 13 to view adult content generated by an algorithm. "TikTok fails to protect children and teenagers from hidden advertising and potentially harmful content," wrote the European Posters' Association in February in a complaint to the EU.

TikTok says that in the coming weeks, some words or hashtags will be able to be put on a 'blacklist', which means that videos with those hashtags will no longer be able to be seen on the main services For You and Following.

Videos can now be marked as "not interested", but this only means that other videos posted by the same user will be skipped. By introducing an age limit, TikTok now intends to classify content in terms of suitability for younger users.

The social network says it will block a post for users under 18 if it determines the video contains "complex themes" or "fictional scenes too intense or scary for younger users." The popular social network has announced that the blocking system will be operational in the next few months.

New users are required to enter their year of birth and must be at least 13 years old. If parents install the application on their smartphone, they can activate the option for their child to join their profile.
