Instagram will test "extra-tall" photos like Reels

Instagram will soon allow its users to post "extra-tall photos" in the 9:16 format as part of a test it plans to run soon. This news was confirmed by the first man of Instagram, Adam Mosseri. Mosseri confirmed testing ultra-tall 9:16 photos in a week or two.

At present, the platform supports only a 4:5 ratio when displaying vertical mages. “You can have tall videos, but you cannot have tall photos on Instagram. So we thought maybe we should make sure that we treat both equally,” Mosseri said.

Although it was previously possible to share a 9:16 photo on Instagram, this only applied to Stories, which means that such photos disappear unless the user saves them as Highlights. The 8:10 format is currently used. This move by Instagram comes shortly after the social network retired its unpopular full-screen interface.

The redesign has been tested since mid-June, but most users did not like it.

Instagram walks back its changes

In an interview last week, Mosseri said, “I think that we need to take a big step back, regroup, and figure out how we want to move forward”.

The company will reduce the number of recommendations displayed to users. “For the new feed designs, people are frustrated and the usage data isn’t great,” he said. “So there I think that we need to take a big step back, regroup, and figure out how we want to move forward”.

“When you discover something in your feed that you didn't follow before, there should be a high bar — it should just be great,” Mosseri said. “You should be delighted to see it. And I don't think that’s happening enough right now.

So I think we need to take a step back, in terms of the percentage of feed that are recommendations, get better at ranking and recommendations, and then — if and when we do — we can start to grow again”.

(“I'm confident we will,” he added.) However, the latest test is an indication that Instagram is still following in TikTok's footsteps.
