Meta's founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has officially lifted the veil on the eagerly anticipated Meta Quest 3, a groundbreaking device designed to revolutionize the realm of virtual and mixed reality.
Quest 3: Building on Meta's Legacy
Set to be available in all countries where the Meta Quest brand has established a presence, the new Quest 3 is set for a fall release, retailing at an accessible price of $500.
Zuckerberg's excitement about the forthcoming release was palpable as he took the stage. He reminisced about the Quest 2, launched almost three years ago, which marked a significant advancement for virtual reality. With the unveiling of Quest 3, he teased audiences with the promise of improvements and innovative technology designed since the launch of the predecessor.
"The next milestone is that we're gearing up to launch our next-generation consumer virtual and mixed reality device later this year," Zuckerberg declared. "It was a very big step forward for VR, and I'm really excited to show the world all the improvements and new technology that we have developed since then at a price point that will be accessible for lots of people." The timing of the presentation, just days before Apple's WWDC event, where it is expected to unveil its long-anticipated headset, adds a layer of intrigue.
Observers suggest that Meta's move may be an attempt to divert some of the spotlight from Apple.
Quest 3: Advancements and Improvements
The Quest 3 promises several technological enhancements over its predecessor. Boasting a higher resolution than the Quest 2, it's powered by a next-generation Snapdragon processor.
This cutting-edge processor is slated to deliver twice the graphics performance of the previous generation Snapdragon GPU, enhancing the user's immersive experience. The new headset is sleeker and lighter, with a 40% thinner optical profile compared to its predecessors.
Also, it features redesigned Touch Plus controllers, which, due to improvements in tracking technology, no longer require external tracking rings. This enhancement allows the controllers to feel more like a "natural extension of the hands." The Quest 3 also benefits from TruTouch haptics technology, first introduced with the Touch Pro controller.
Existing Touch Pro controllers can be used with the new headset, providing users with an expanded range of options. Hand tracking is a core feature of Quest 3, adding another layer of immersion to the VR experience. Additionally, Quest 3 supports Quest 2's extensive catalog of over 500 VR games, apps, and experiences, ensuring users won't miss out on any of their favorite virtual adventures.
