In an unanticipated revelation, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, expressed concerns about the potential power of artificial intelligence (AI) to the senior leaders of China, implying that an AI-driven "digital superintelligence" could potentially challenge the dominance of the Chinese Communist Party.
An AI Forecast in the Middle Kingdom
Musk took to Twitter Spaces on Wednesday to recount his discussions with China's top leadership during a trip in May. According to the tech magnate, the conversations focused on the potential perils of AI and its prospective capacity for dominance.
"No government wants to find itself unseated by a digital superintelligence," Musk shared on the call, suggesting his words struck a chord with his listeners. This speculation on Musk's part demonstrates the global apprehension surrounding the unchecked acceleration of AI development.
The cautionary conversation was not confined within the borders of China. Musk's AI anxieties have been growing louder since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT, a language prediction model. Previously, Musk had raised the alarm about the potential of artificial intelligence evolving into a kind of "superintelligence" with human-like abilities.
The Launch of xAI: The Universe in AI's Hands
The digital town hall took place against the backdrop of Musk's latest venture unveiling, xAI. This new company aims to rival OpenAI and other tech giants while striving to "understand the true nature of the universe".
Musk emphasized the importance of this exploration for humanity, stating that the universe "is just much more interesting than not humanity". Musk’s fellow discussants on the call included Rep. Ro Khanna and Rep. Mike Gallagher.
"I think trying to understand the universe is going to be pro-humanity," Musk said, suggesting the potential benefits of his new project. Musk also expressed the desire to "press pause" on the progress of AI, although he acknowledged the impracticality of such a notion.
A Global Framework for AI Regulation
As an esteemed guest in China, Musk engaged with senior government officials and business leaders, discussing cutting-edge topics such as artificial intelligence. His dialogues sparked interest in the creation of a "cooperative international framework" for AI regulation.
However, despite this hopeful step, Musk admitted a considerable level of distrust towards the United States, potentially hindering international cooperation.
