Michael Bloomberg is co-founder and owner of the financial services, software and mass media company that bears his name, Bloomberg LP, for 12 years mayor of New York from 2001 to 2013. Elected with the Republican Party, he then left it remaining independent.

According to Forbes, as of July 23, 2023, with an estimated net worth of $94.5 billion, he is one of the richest men in the world. Bloomberg was born in Boston to a family of Jewish immigrants of Russian nationality. Bloomberg attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, was also a member of Phi Kappa Psi, graduating in 1964 with a degree in electrical engineering.

He later earned a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard University. Ancillary products including Bloomberg News, Bloomberg Message and Bloomberg Tradebook have been launched over the years. As early as 2010, Forbes magazine ranked Michael Bloomberg tenth among the 400 richest men in America with an estimated fortune of $18 billion.

As of October 2015, the company had over 325,000 terminal subscribers worldwide. Bloomberg's company also owns a radio network including the most important one, New York radio (1130 WBBR AM). Bloomberg stepped down as CEO when he ran for mayor of New York.

He was replaced by Lex Fenwick and later Daniel L. Doctoroff. After completing his last term as mayor of New York, Bloomberg spent his first eight months away from office dedicating himself full-time to philanthropy. In fall 2014 he announced his return to the company as CEO succeeding Doctoroff.

He has also written an autobiography, with the help of Bloomberg editor-in-chief Matthew Winkler, titled Bloomberg by Bloomberg. He was elected mayor in 2001 as successor to Rudolph Giuliani, also thanks to an impressive electoral campaign, narrowly defeating his opponent, Mark J.

Green.
He married in 1975 to Elisabeth Barbara Brown, an English citizen of Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. From the marriage two daughters: Emma and Georgina. Both were featured in Born Rich, a documentary film about the children of the richest. Bloomberg divorced his wife in 1993. Since 2000, he has lived with former New York bank superintendent Diana Taylor.
