Germany in crisis: A large number of children will live in poverty!

On Wednesday, the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced that children in Germany who have parents with lower levels of education are particularly vulnerable to poverty. Children and young people under the age of 18 who live in households where the parents have only completed primary school, and no other education pertaining to profession, are at higher risk of entering the poor category than those with a parent who has finished secondary school only, but has not completed an education for any profession, the Statistics Office said.

There has been an increase in the percentage of children who are at risk of poverty among families with low levels of education in the last year, from 37.6 percent to 40.9 percent. According to statistics, the probability of parents in a household falling into poverty rapidly decreases as the level of education of their children increases.

It is significant to note that this percentage is significantly lower for children living in families where both parents have a secondary education, which is 14.5 percent. This rate is 6.7 percent for families whose parents have higher and higher education.

Estimation

There are an estimated 2.2 million children and young people in Germany at risk of living in poverty, which represents 14.8% of all citizens under the age of 18 who are at risk of poverty. The European Union considers citizens to be poor if they have incomes that are less than 60% of the average income of the population, based on the methodology of the Union.

Essentially, for a single person living in a household with one other person, this means 1,250 euros per month as a monthly income. It is estimated that if two adults with two children under the age of 14 live below 2,625 euros per month, they will be considered poor.

In accordance with the Federal Statistical Office, which has released a press release about poverty, poverty is not solely a financial issue but also a social issue. It is estimated that 24 percent of all people younger than the age of 18 are facing poverty or feeling isolated from others in the community
