In an intriguing move for global geopolitics, the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is poised to make a groundbreaking announcement regarding the expansion of the BRICS group of nations. On Thursday morning, President Ramaphosa is set to reveal the countries that have been selected for potential inclusion as full-fledged members of this influential coalition.

A Meticulously Thought-Out Expansion

The backdrop to this announcement has been a series of discussions and deliberations at the highest echelons of BRICS leadership. South Africa's BRICS Sherpa, Anil Sooklal, in conversation with TASS, gave insight into the rigorous process that has preceded this moment.

He stated that the leaders, after a discussion "based on the recommendation of ministers," dove into an extensive conversation surrounding the topic. "Expansion has to be a carefully considered position," Sooklal elaborated, emphasizing the significance of the decision at hand.

This meticulous process was not limited to just one or two meetings. Sooklal explained that the discussions had been ongoing, but consensus on the issue of expansion was finally reached. In essence, this was not a decision made in haste but after thoughtful and prolonged consideration.

Criteria for Inclusion

Before any country can join this elite grouping, it has to pass a set of predetermined criteria. Thankfully, Sooklal provided some insight into this as well, confirming that the expansion criteria were "finalized and adopted by consensus by our leaders." This process, he indicated, has come to a conclusion, making it feasible for the leaders to settle on which countries they'll consider for full membership.

It's noteworthy that these criteria weren't set overnight. "The work on BRICS expansion criteria was actively conducted at various levels since last year," Sooklal commented, hinting at the depth and breadth of thought that has gone into this initiative.

A New Dawn for BRICS?

As the world awaits President Ramaphosa's announcement, it's clear that the potential expansion of BRICS is emblematic of the changing face of global alliances and politics. The selected countries will likely experience both economic and political implications from this inclusion.

As the world watches with bated breath, the question on everyone's mind is: Which nations will become the newest members of this powerful group? Only time will tell.
