In a recent statement that signals strengthening geopolitical ties, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted the potential benefits of inviting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to join the influential BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

"This will be a very positive influence, both in our bilateral ties and relations between the United Arab Emirates and other members of the BRICS family," Lavrov commented during a gathering at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University).

The inclusion of the UAE into the BRICS could be viewed as a strategic move to bolster mutual understanding and collaboration among nations.

The Growing Bond between Russia and UAE

In a testament to the rapidly growing relations between Moscow and Abu Dhabi, 2022 saw the UAE rise as Russia's foremost trade ally in the Arab world.

Lavrov attributed this burgeoning partnership to a mutual emphasis on national interests. "The reason for this successful cooperation is that both the United Arab Emirates and the Russian Federation proceed from their national interests and would not tolerate any pressure which would make them sacrifice their national interests and the interests of developing their economies, their peoples," Lavrov said.

It’s clear from the foreign minister's sentiments that both countries are committed to fostering a relationship built on mutual respect, understanding, and shared objectives. This sentiment was further underlined with the announcement of a significant new venture.

Fostering Cultural and Academic Exchange

Lavrov revealed plans to inaugurate the UAE Center at the MGIMO University. This initiative is seen as a pivotal step in enhancing not just political and economic ties, but also cultural and academic exchanges between Russia and the UAE.

The foreign minister, alongside the MGIMO dean and the UAE envoy, is slated to mark the opening of this center, symbolizing the dawn of a fresh chapter in the historical relationship of the two nations. As global alliances shift and economies intertwine more closely, the prospective inclusion of the UAE in the BRICS and the concurrent strengthening of bilateral ties with Russia signifies the evolution of a new geopolitical landscape. Only time will tell what other innovations and collaborations this partnership will bring to the global stage.
