US President Joe Biden met with his Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky, at the White House. This high-profile meeting, covered by the press service of the US president, was an important step forward for both nations. The discussions revolved around several pivotal issues—ranging from the restoration of Ukraine's energy and economic sectors to the ongoing fight against corruption.

Deepening Military and Economic Cooperation

The meeting between the two leaders was not just a formality but a sign of the US's long-term commitment to bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities. "The United States is committed to bolstering Ukraine’s defensive capabilities in the long term, including through partnerships with Ukraine’s defense industrial base," announced the White House.

In a bid to further deepen the relationship, the US government will host a conference this fall. This event, an emblem of bilateral cooperation, is set to unite US defense industries, Ukrainian business magnates, and government officials from both nations.

The aim? To "explore options for joint ventures and co-production," bringing together the expertise and resources of both countries. Moreover, the economic future of Ukraine took a significant portion of the conversation. The two leaders shed light on the US's commitment to bolstering Ukraine's energy sector, aiming for a swift economic recovery.

Recognizing the importance of a robust energy infrastructure, they "talked about efforts to increase energy generation and transmission capacity," according to the press service. The tangible outcome of this commitment was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, which serves to "strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience."

Tackling Corruption Head-On

The specter of corruption loomed large, with President Zelensky candidly sharing his strategies to combat this longstanding issue.

Evidently, President Biden recognizes the criticality of this fight, emphasizing "the importance of strong, politically independent anti-corruption institutions." He particularly lauded the efforts of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, and the High Anti-Corruption Court.

On the Front of Defense and Diplomacy

Beyond economy and corruption, the defense of Ukraine was also a prominent topic. Biden asserted the US's unwavering support for Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive. He reinforced that the US will support Ukraine "for as long as it takes," holding Russia accountable for its attributed actions.

The White House also commended President Zelensky's "ongoing diplomatic effort to secure global support for a just and lasting peace."
