Italian President Sergio Mattarella, during a joint press conference in Tashkent with Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, underscored the imperative of a two-state solution as the linchpin for resolving the enduring Israel-Palestine conflict.
Firmly stating that stability and peace can only be achieved through acknowledging the existence of two distinct states for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, Mattarella highlighted Italy's unwavering support for international initiatives dedicated to achieving resolution within the framework of a two-state solution.
In his address, President Mattarella emphasized the significance of granting Palestinians their own state as a means to mitigate radicalization within their population. He criticized oppressive measures such as random bombings and the targeting of civilians, arguing that such tactics not only fail to achieve their objectives but also contribute to the radicalization of the Palestinian people.
Shifting gears to the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Mattarella recognized the importance of avoiding humiliating Russia while addressing its invasion of Ukraine. However, he unequivocally asserted that resorting to aggression against a neighboring country is an unacceptable method for resolving disputes.
Describing Russia's actions as a serious mistake that hampers progress, the Italian president voiced support for ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving Ukraine's territorial integrity.
Italy positions itself as an advocate for diplomatic solutions that prioritize stability
President Mattarella cautioned against altering established borders, citing the potential escalation of global conflict.
He underscored the 21st-century imperative of respecting and upholding existing territorial boundaries, particularly in the cases of Ukraine and Crimea. Under Mattarella's leadership, Italy positions itself as an advocate for diplomatic solutions that prioritize stability, adherence to international norms, and the preservation of territorial integrity.
This stance solidifies Italy's role as a proponent of maintaining geopolitical order through diplomatic channels. In the end, he returned to the conflict in the Middle East and expressed his condolences for all the victims, both civilian and military, on both sides.
This positive and neutral attitude of the Italian president should be cherished by everyone and surely problems would be solved more easily.
