In a recent press availability in New Delhi, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed his most direct condemnation yet of the civilian death toll in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for action to minimize harm to Palestinian civilians.

Blinken's statements come amidst a backdrop of escalating tensions and violence in the region, marking a critical moment in US foreign policy.

The Call for Humanitarian Measures

Blinken commended Israel for initiating daily humanitarian pauses and establishing two humanitarian corridors.

However, he emphasized that these measures were not sufficient, stating, "there is more that can and should be done to minimize harm to Palestinian civilians." This statement reflects a growing concern over the humanitarian impact of the conflict on the Palestinian population.

Blinken's comments in New Delhi were not just words of sympathy but a call to action. He expressed a deep concern for the Palestinian casualties and suffering, stating, "Far too many Palestinians have been killed. Far too many have suffered these past weeks." This sentiment was reinforced by his commitment to "do everything possible to prevent harm to them and to maximize the assistance that gets to them."

Progress and Challenges Ahead

The Secretary's messaging has seen a subtle shift since his departure from the Middle East earlier this week.

He has started to voice more direct condemnation of the civilian toll in Gaza and laid out clear expectations for the Israeli government. In his meeting with Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Blinken discussed the US' vision for a "durable and sustainable peace" in Gaza post-war.

He outlined several fundamental principles, including the prevention of forcible displacement of Palestinians, the non-utilization of Gaza as a launchpad for attacks against Israel, and a commitment to Palestinian land governance.

Although Blinken acknowledged some progress in these areas, he also recognized the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in implementing these agreements. "It's always a process and moving from an understanding, moving from an agreement to the implementation is what we're working on right now," he noted.

Blinken reiterated the US' commitment to resolving the conflict, focusing on bringing hostages home and preventing the conflict from expanding. His statements in New Delhi represent a significant moment in US diplomacy, highlighting the delicate balance between supporting an ally and addressing humanitarian concerns in a conflict-ridden region.
