Russia launched what is described as the largest drone attack against Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, since the beginning of the invasion. According to Ukraine’s Air Force, nearly 75 Shahed drones, originating from Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Kursk region in Russia, targeted the city in a coordinated assault.

This event marks a worrying increase in the intensity and scale of the attacks, indicating a shift in Russia's military tactics. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that their air defenses intercepted 71 of these Iranian-made drones across six regions, with a majority being thwarted in the Kyiv region itself.

The complex defense response involved anti-aircraft missile troops, tactical aviation, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units. Additionally, a Kh-59 guided missile was destroyed in the Dnipropetrovsk region, showcasing the heightened defensive measures employed by Ukraine.

Impact and Response in Kyiv

The scale of the attack prompted immediate action in Kyiv, with residents urged to seek shelter. Mykhailo Shamanov, a spokesman for the Kyiv city military administration, described the attack as involving several waves of drones coming from different directions.

This month alone, Kyiv has experienced four drone attacks, underscoring the city's strategic importance and the relentless pressure it faces. The attack had tangible consequences on the ground. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported that at least two people were injured in the Solomianskyi district.

Fires broke out in several locations, including a residential building and other premises. Additionally, the wreckage of downed drones caused damage in various districts, including an incident where a fire broke out at a kindergarten premises after a drone was downed.

The attack also had significant infrastructural impacts. The country’s Energy Ministry stated that the assault cut off power to an overhead line, leaving numerous residential buildings and establishments without electricity in the city center.

This latest incident in Kyiv is a stark reminder of the ongoing severity of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. As hostilities continue, the international community closely watches the evolving situation, particularly the increased use of drone technology in warfare and its implications for civilian safety and urban infrastructure.
