Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed his intention to seek re-election in the 2024 presidential race. This announcement came during a conversation with attendees at a Heroes of the Fatherland Day ceremony held in the Kremlin.

A Decision Influenced by Public Request

The momentous decision was influenced by requests from various participants at the ceremony. Notably, Artem Zhoga, the speaker of the parliament of the Donetsk People’s Republic and a father grieving the loss of his son in the special military operation, implored Putin to consider another term.

In response to this heartfelt appeal, Putin acknowledged the weight of the decision, saying, "Well, as for now, you are right. It is time to decide." Putin’s current term is set to end on May 7, 2024, with the next presidential election scheduled for March 17 of the same year.

His announcement is a pivotal moment in Russian politics, indicating a continued path for the current administration.

The Path Ahead

On the sidelines of the Heroes of the Fatherland Day ceremony, commemorated on December 9 in Russia, Putin received similar requests from other attendees.

Zhoga's request, representing the people of the new Russian regions, was particularly poignant. He expressed gratitude for the freedom and choice they have gained under Putin's leadership and stressed the need for continued guidance in social and economic integration, and the transition to a peaceful life.

"Thanks to your actions and your decision, we have gained freedom and the right to choose," Zhoga stated, highlighting the significance of Putin's leadership. "We would like to do this under your leadership. You are our president and we are your team.

We need you, and Russia needs you," he added, emphasizing the collective desire for Putin's continued presidency. Acknowledging these sentiments, Putin expressed his gratitude for the support and reiterated his contemplation about the decision.

"I have had different thoughts about this issue," he admitted. "However, I understand that there is no other way today. That is why I will run for president of Russia."
