Since October 7, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has intensified alarmingly. Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant recently announced the nearing end of what he termed the "intensive manoeuvring stage" of Israel's military offensive in Gaza.

This phase, originally planned to last about three months, has resulted in over 24,000 Palestinian deaths. Many casualties occurred in areas where residents had been advised by Israel to evacuate, highlighting the tragic consequences of the conflict.

Children, Women, Elderly: The Disproportionate Victims

The conflict has seen at least 10,600 children among the dead in Gaza since October 7. Women and elderly people make up a significant portion of the casualties, accounting for 75% of the deaths.

The conflict's ripple effects are evident in the wider region. Iran's Revolutionary Guards launched missile strikes against what they claim to be an Israeli spy base in northern Iraq and against groups in Syria perceived as anti-Iran.

This escalation has drawn condemnation from the US and UN but is defended by Iran as a precise and targeted response. Additionally, the US seized Iranian-made ballistic and cruise missile components en route to Yemen, underscoring the broader geopolitical tensions.

Ceasefire Efforts and Sanctions: A Quest for Peace

Amidst the violence, there have been calls for peace. Saudi Arabia's foreign minister advocated for an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of a Palestinian state at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Concurrently, the European Council imposed sanctions on Yahya Sinwar, Hamas' political leader, freezing his financial assets in EU member states.

A Humanitarian Crisis: Famine and Hostages

The war has precipitated a rapid onset of famine in Gaza, leaving hundreds of thousands of Palestinians facing starvation.

The UN's relief chief has expressed alarm at the speed at which this crisis has developed, emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation.

Hostage Situations: Psychological Warfare

Hamas has released multiple videos of hostages, some of which appear to show deceased captives.
