Apollo 17, launched on December 7, 1972, was the eleventh and final mission of NASA's Apollo program. It was the sixth and so far the last time humans set foot on the moon or traveled beyond low Earth orbit. The mission commander was Eugene Cernan, the lunar module pilot Harrison Schmitt, and the command module pilot Ronald Evans.

Schmitt was the only professional geologist to ever walk on the moon, and was chosen over Joe Engle at NASA's insistence that it send a scientist to the moon. Cernan and Schmitt spent three days on the Moon, during which they performed three EVAs (exit from the vehicle) for a total of 22 hours and 4 minutes.

Using the lunar rover, they traveled 35.9 km and collected 110.5 kg of soil and rock samples. The Apollo 17 mission enriched our knowledge about the Moon and its origin, but in recent years there has been an opinion among experts that knowledge needs to be renewed now with modern and much more powerful technology.

The United States did it spectacularly yesterday. After more than 50 years, a private spacecraft named Odyssey successfully landed on the lunar surface, marking the first such event since a visit by a NASA crew during the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972.

After a 73-minute descent from orbit, the spacecraft successfully touched down near the south pole of the Moon. The venture was not without risk, and Intuitive Machines founder Steve Altemus only gave it an 80% chance of success.
