A government research institute in the United Arab Emirates has announced a new open-source generative AI model. This model could potentially compete with those developed by large technology companies. The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) in Abu Dhabi has revealed that it is launching the Falcon 2 product series.

This series includes the Falcon 2 11B, a text model, and the Falcon 2 11B VLM, which can generate text descriptions of uploaded images. TII is a research center under the Abu Dhabi Advanced Technology Research Council. The United Arab Emirates, a major oil exporter and influential force in the Middle East, is investing heavily in artificial intelligence.

American or Chinese technology

These investments also attracted the attention of American officials, who last year set an ultimatum: American or Chinese technology. Emirati AI company G42 has pulled out of Chinese hardware and sold its stakes in Chinese companies.

After that, he secured a $1.5 billion investment from Microsoft, in coordination with Washington. Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council and Advisor to the President on Strategic Research and Advanced Technology, said the UAE is demonstrating its ability to be a significant player in artificial intelligence.

The Falcon 2 product series comes at a time when companies and countries are looking to develop their own large-scale language models following the release of ChatGPT in 2022. While some have chosen to keep their AI code proprietary, others, such as UAE-based Falcon and UAE-based Llama, have done so their code publicly available for use.

Al Bannai expressed optimism about Falcon 2's performance and mentioned ongoing efforts to develop a "Falcon 3 generation." "We are very proud to continue to compete with the best players in the world." The Falcon 2 series, with its open source approach, aims to foster a collaborative environment where developers and researchers around the world can contribute to and benefit from these advances.

The UAE's strategy to embrace the open source AI model aligns with a growing trend in the tech community. This move will definitely accelerate the UAE's position in the global AI landscape, potentially attracting further investment and cooperation.
