Google’s journey with AI-powered products has been a rollercoaster. Each new release seems to follow a predictable cycle: initial excitement, public scrutiny, and often, a swift retreat. This pattern was starkly evident back in February when Google had to withdraw an image-generating feature from its AI chatbot due to public backlash. Fast forward to today, and we see a similar scenario unfolding with Google’s AI Overview feature, designed to replace traditional search results with AI-generated summaries.

The concept behind AI Overview is ambitious. Instead of presenting users with a list of links to websites containing the information they seek, Google attempts to summarize that content directly. However, users have been quick to spot and share the feature's inaccuracies, some of which are not just incorrect but dangerously misleading. This has sparked concerns over whether Google might need to retract this feature as well.

Addressing the Missteps

Google acknowledges the occasional errors in its AI-generated answers but insists that these instances are rare. The company maintains that most users are not troubled by erroneous responses to odd queries, such as the recommended number of rocks to consume or dangerous advice about sun exposure. Google asserts that it actively monitors and rectifies such misleading information.

Lara Levin, a spokesperson for Google, stated, “The vast majority of AI Overviews provide high-quality information, with links to dig deeper on the web. Many of the examples we've seen have been uncommon queries, and we've also seen examples that were doctored or that we couldn't reproduce. We conducted extensive testing before launching this new experience, and as with other features we've launched in Search, we appreciate the feedback. We're taking swift action where appropriate under our content policies, and using these examples to develop broader improvements to our systems, some of which have already started to roll out.”

Despite these assurances, the pattern of public backlash and Google's attempts at damage control feels familiar. It raises the question: what if Google’s AI continues to produce faulty answers, and what if these errors become widely known among regular users, not just tech-savvy critics?

The Stakes for Google's Core Business

Google’s value, exceeding $2 trillion, hinges primarily on its search engine and the associated advertising revenue. A loss of public trust in its search results could have significant repercussions. Unlike previous times when Google merely directed users to external sources, it now shoulders the responsibility for the accuracy of the answers it provides. This shift places Google in a vulnerable position, where the quality and reliability of its AI-generated content are paramount.

Privately, Google employees argue that the current issues are minor and manageable compared to past controversies, such as the "woke Google" debacle involving image generation. They emphasize that no AI system is perfect since it relies on existing online content, which is inherently imperfect.

From a user’s perspective, while Google's AI-generated answers have generally been satisfactory, there are notable exceptions. The critical difference now is the level of trust users place in Google to provide accurate answers directly, rather than merely pointing them toward potential sources of information.

Competition and the Race for AI Dominance

The backdrop to Google's AI push is the fierce competition with other AI platforms, particularly OpenAI's ChatGPT. This rivalry drives Google to innovate rapidly, even at the risk of occasional missteps. Users familiar with ChatGPT might prefer it for AI-generated responses, posing a threat to Google’s dominance in search.

The speed and manner of Google’s AI integration could be perceived as hasty or sloppy, yet reversing course now seems improbable.

Microsoft’s AI Expansion: A New Frontier

In parallel, Microsoft is expanding its AI capabilities across its product suite, including LinkedIn. According to sources, Microsoft is planning to allocate significant AI computing resources to develop a LinkedIn Copilot. This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to embed AI within its products, enhancing features such as summarizing email threads, analyzing cybersecurity threats, and now, potentially, offering advanced AI tools on LinkedIn.

The internal planning document hints at significant advancements beyond LinkedIn's current AI tools, suggesting a major upgrade in how AI could assist professional networking, hiring, and sales processes. This move aligns with Microsoft's overall vision of integrating AI deeply into its ecosystem, leveraging the vast data available on LinkedIn to create powerful AI-driven functionalities.

The journey of AI in search and professional networking underscores a broader trend: the growing importance of AI in everyday applications. Both Google and Microsoft are at the forefront of this evolution, each facing unique challenges and opportunities.
