Each of the previous games of the British studio Supermassive Games could boast of huge replayability, primarily due to the brilliantly implemented "butterfly effect" which gave us the opportunity to create a sequel that leads to one of the many ends.

This development team with its new project, the new survival horror adventure The Quarry plans to take the whole story to a whole new level, offering a record number of different endings so far.

Believe it or not, The Quarry will, according to the developers, have as many as 186 different endings. The reason for this lies in the incredible 1,000-page script, which, according to game director Will Byles, is 10 times more than the script the actors have for the film.

The grandeur of the whole project is further enhanced by the fact that the authors of the game "recorded" up to 50 pages of scripts per day, which is, with the expected repetition of similar scenes due to many permuting gameplay factors (each character may or may not survive each combination is possible), truly a lion’s share of work.

Script has over a thousand pages

“Writing a branching narrative is a really interesting exercise,” Byles said via IGN. “We write a full, hundred-page screenplay as if it were a movie. We develop our character styles, and once we’ve got that, then we can start looking at how we break that out into a full 10-hour experience”.

“Actors are used to, on a feature film, a hundred-page script,” Byles continues. “So when we send the actors the scripts they get very alarmed because they’re huge. The script for this is over a thousand pages.

We have to shoot about 50 pages a day, which is unheard of. It’s just a mad amount of footage. But obviously, a lot of what they’re learning is the same thing again and again and again, but a different branch”.

It will be interesting to see to what extent the players will really take advantage of all the possibilities of the game and whether and to what extent this move of the Supermassive Games will affect the durability of the game.

However, trophy hunters are already fearing that unlocking all 186 endings might be necessary for platinum. 🙂 The Quarry comes out on June 10 and will be available in PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, and PC versions.
