Creator of Elden Ring confused by popularity

This year's hit video game Elden Ring is not the first game developed by FromSoftware and certainly not the first game that has been directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. As a result, Elden Ring has sold more copies than all three Dark Souls games combined in its first few months.

While the games from FormSoftware, such as Bloodborne and Ax, have been critically acclaimed and nominated for awards, they have never reached the 16 million+ players that Elden Ring has achieved. As a result, the game went from being considered as one of the weakest games in the FromSoftware collection to being one of the most popular on the market.

What made this game so popular? In an interview with Sony's partner awards, director Hidetaka Miyazaki was asked exactly this kind of question. You may have expected that Miyazaki would have some interesting insights into what intrigued players about Elden Ring, but that is not the case at all.

His statement indicates that he has no idea what has caused the game to become so popular.

Miyazaki's statement

"Honestly, I didn't do a lot of analysis. It's true that the sales of Elden Ring are higher than the sales of our previous games, but I don't know the reason for that.

Even if I wanted to repeat that success, I wouldn't be able to." - answered Miyazaki, saying that the games will continue to work as if the success of Elden Ring never happened. "I try not to think too much about that popularity, I think it would be a bad idea to engage in deep analysis and consciously try to repeat it in another game." Miyazaki explained In any case, Miyazaki should enjoy the popularity he currently has and use it in the right way. Miyazaki did a great thing, and he didn't intend to stop there.
