Final Fantasy XIV Sets Course for Xbox Consoles in Spring 2024

Highly-acclaimed game developer Square Enix has revealed that the much-anticipated Final Fantasy XIV is finally en route to Xbox consoles. The date is set for next year, and the news is music to the ears of Xbox Series X and S owners worldwide.

A Long Awaited Homecoming

The path to the Xbox has been a long journey for Final Fantasy XIV. Initially released on PlayStation 3 and PC in 2013, the game subsequently found homes on PlayStation 4 in 2014, Mac in 2015, and, most recently, PlayStation 5 in 2021.

Yet, despite the broad adoption, Xbox consoles remained a void in the game's distribution map. That is until Square Enix confirmed the title's impending release for the Xbox Series X|S in spring 2024. Fans can expect the same 4K visuals and improved loading times seen on the PlayStation 5 version of the game.

Yet, the possibility of Xbox-only enhancements remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Tackling the Xbox Gap in the Final Fantasy Universe

Microsoft has long harbored ambitions to add more titles from the Final Fantasy series to its game catalog.

In 2019, it made strides in this direction, incorporating Final Fantasy editions VII through XV into its Game Pass offerings. However, the lack of XIV, an active MMO, left a noticeable gap. The move to introduce Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox consoles aims to bring together fans of the series, specifically those feeling left out due to the exclusivity of Final Fantasy XVI to the PlayStation 5.

Additionally, it targets a broader outreach towards Japanese gamers and JRPG enthusiasts. This may also mark a small but significant shift in Microsoft's fortunes in Japan, where the company has grappled with challenges primarily because many local studios prefer homegrown consoles like Nintendo and Sony.

Final Fantasy XIV's release won't be an overnight game-changer, but it does promise to tear down some barriers for certain gamers. In a note on Xbox's official blog, the excitement was palpable. "We’re thrilled to finally be launching on Xbox Series X|S, and this is just the beginning of our journey together.

We’re looking forward to sharing much more information in the run-up to launch and welcoming you all to Eorzea! Until then, may you ever walk in the light of the Crystal!" it stated.
