During the Game Awards 2023, Sony Santa Monica and the legendary Kratos himself delivered a double whammy: a surprise appearance to announce free rogue-like DLC for God of War Ragnarok, and the revelation that the critically acclaimed 2022 title has already sold an impressive 15 million copies worldwide.

This is another proof of the popularity of this series, which has recently exploded. This news comes via a post on the PlayStation Blog by Senior Community Manager at Santa Monica Studio, Grace Orlady. She stated, "As of November 19th, God of War Ragnarok has sold more than 15 million units worldwide on PS4 and PS5." This milestone marks a remarkable achievement for the franchise, which has been reached within just one year of its launch on November 9, 2022.

The players are satisfied, and the producers of the game can be satisfied with this outcome.

Great popularity of the latest part of the game

In comparison, 2018's God of War title reached 10 million copies sold by May 2019.

This shows that Ragnarok is outselling its predecessor by a significant 50% in the same time frame. While it still has some ground to cover to match the original game's 2018 sales total of 23 million copies as of November 2022, the rapid climb to 15 million and the upcoming free DLC suggest that Ragnarok is well on its way to becoming the best-selling game in series.

The free DLC, titled "Valhalla," promises a unique rogue-like experience that blends the beloved combat of God of War Ragnarok with fresh gameplay elements inspired by the genre. Players will embark on a deeply personal and thoughtful journey alongside Kratos, facing new challenges and potentially encountering some unexpected surprises.

This exciting addition to the God of War Ragnarok experience is available as a free download for all owners of the base game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The success of the game is proof of the incredible work of the Santa Monica studio, who made, if not the best, then the most popular part of God of War.
