An only child, Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem on June 9, 1981 to Avner Hershlag, a fertility specialist of Polish and Romanian origin, and to Shelley Stevens, an American housewife from Cincinnati, who will later be her agent.
Her father named her Natalie in honor of the song of the same name by the French singer and composer Gilbert Bécaud. At the age of three she moved with her family to Washington and later to Syosset, a center of 12,000 inhabitants on Long Island (New York), where she settled permanently.
She stated that her grandmother, to whom she is very attached, is a native of Romania. In May 2002 edition of Vogue magazine, Natalie Portman referred to actor and musician Lukas Haas and musician Moby as her closest people.
From 2003 to 2004 and again in 2007 she dated Mexican actor Gael García Bernal. After participating in the video of her song Carmensita, she began a relationship with folk singer Devendra Banhart, which ended in September 2008.
She was a vegetarian for twenty years, later becoming vegan following reading the book: Eating animals, by Jonathan Safran Foer. She is fluent in Hebrew and English, she knows French, German, Japanese and for some years she has been studying Arabic.

In 2009, after reading Jonathan Safran Foer's book Eating animals, she went vegan. She does not eat animal meat or derivative products and even less dresses in leather, feathers, wool or fur clothes. "All my shoes are made by Target or Stella McCartney."
