K-pop band BTS dominated the American Music Awards (AMAs) that were held in Los Angeles on 21st November. The band was nominated in three categories – the Artist of the Year, Favourite Pop Duo or Group, and the Favourite Pop Song (for Butter).

The band swept all three categories, beating the likes of Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Drake, and Weeknd among others in the Artist of the Year category. Speaking after receiving the Artist of the Year award, the band leader, Kim Nam-Joon or Rap Monster (RM) as he’s more popularly known said, “…Four years ago, we gave this first-time-ever TV live performance at this stage, AMAs, it was ‘DNA,’ and we were too excited and nervous at the time.

And it’s been a long and amazing ride since then, but nobody could have ever bet on the odds of us standing here receiving this award. Except you all, ARMY. Except you all. Seven boys from Korea, united by a love for music.

We met the love and support from all the ARMYs all over the world. This whole thing is a miracle. Seriously, we’ll never take this for granted. Thank you so much. We love you all, we want to give this honour to you guys. Thank you HYBE, thank you, staff, all the people”.

Earlier, while beginning his speech, RM emotionally acknowledged that he’d forgotten what he wanted to say. BTS was formed in 2013. The seven members are RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, V, Jimin and Jungkook.

This was the third straight year that the band won the Favourite Pop Duo or Group award. Likewise, in winning the Artist of the Year award, the band became the first Asian artist to pick up the award. Apart from BTS, Swift, too, picked up a couple of awards. The American singer won the Favourite Female Pop Artist award while her album Evermore won the Best Pop Album award.
