Sam Worthington was born in Godalming, England, in the county of Surrey, where he attended Farncombe Junior School. He later moved with his family to Perth, Australia. He grew up in Warnbro, a suburb of Rockingham in the west of the country.
His father, Ronald, is an employee of the city's power plant, while his mother is a housewife who raised him and his younger sister. He attended the John Curtin College of The Arts, but dropped out at the age of seventeen to take up construction and other odd assignments.
Eventually he went to Sydney, where he worked as a bricklayer until, in 1995, he was accepted on a scholarship at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. Worthington gets the role of the main character Jake Sully in Avatar and that of the protagonist, together with Christian Bale, also in Terminator Salvation.
The two films made his career take off: in 2010 the blockbuster Clash of the Titans was released, in which he played the protagonist Perseus alongside Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

In 2011 he participated as an actor in the video game commercial Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, together with the American actor and producer Jonah Hill Feldstein, In the video game series he also voiced Captain Alex Mason in Call of Duty: Black Ops of 2009 and 2012's Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
He has had a long history with the actress Maeve Dermody, and with the stylist Natalie Mark, also Australian. He has been in a relationship with model Lara Bingle since October 2013. The couple have three children. Winner of the 2009 GQ Man of the Year award in Australia, beating out actors such as Eric Bana and Russell Crowe, in his early 30s, Worthington sold most of his possessions, from which he made close to $2,000, and with the money he collected he then bought a car which he lived in until he landed the role in Avatar which he said changed his life.
