“Avatar: The way of Water” makes $17mln in previews, projects $150mln-$175mln opening

After a delay of thirteen year, “Avatar 2”, titled as “Avatar: The Way of Water,” makes its way into the theatre on Thursday, while the James Cameron’s sequel of 2009 cameo “Avatar” had totalled a grossing of $17 million in the domestic box office.

The film is projected to earn an upsum between $150 million and $175 million over the opening weekend, which in effect would rank it as one of the highest-grossing movies in debut. If truth is to be spoken, the original “Avatar” had earned $77 million at its opening weekend back in the 2009, however, following a robust earning across the globe alongside a word-of-mouth 3-D motion picture experience, the film has still been ranked as the highest-grossing movie of all time across the globe.

The “Avatar” sequel would likely to open at third in terms of highest grossing debuts in 2022, behind “Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness” alongside “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.

“Doctor Strange: The Multiverse of Madness” had tallied a $185 million over its opening weekend earlier this year, while “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” had grossed a $181 million at its debut over the second half of the year.

Besides, “Avatar: The Way of Water” had opened in 4,202 silver screens on Friday, while the film had earned a total of $50.4 million from 44 international box offices excluding China.

In China, the film had opened with a whacking $18.5 million. “Avatar 2” is projected to earn a whopping $100 million over its opening weekend in China. “Avatar: The Way of Water” costed an approximated $350 million to $400 million, marking off the fourth highest expensive movies of all-time excluding promos.
