“Avatar: The Way of Water” becomes sixth film in history to top $2 billion

“Avatar: The Way of Water,” the James Cameron’s billion-dollar blockbuster sequel of “Avatar” (2009) continues to break off records in global box offices, as the film became the sixth film in the history of moviemaking to reach a $2-billion landmark over the weekend.

On top of that, “Avatar: The Way of Water” stood at a spitting distance to “Avengers: Infinity War” with a grossing of $2.02 billion as of Sunday night. Aside from that, “Avatar: The Way of Water” has been the first pandemic-era film to reach a $2-billion milestone.

In tandem, contemplating the pace at which “Avatar: The Way of Water” has been splashing over the global box offices, several analysts were quoted as saying that the film could easily challenge the grossing of original “Avatar,” which is still the highest-grossing film across the globe with a total of $2.9 billion.

Apart from that, “Avatar: The Way of Water” had reached a $2bn landmark in less than six weeks after release, while the original Avatar took seven weeks to reach a $2bn landmark.

However, although, the original Avatar stopped at $2.75 billion after release, and had been briefly overtaken by “Avenger: End Game” before a re-release in China, “Avatar: The Way of Water” has had the potential to surpass all of them, suggested a number of industry analysts citing a cool and calm January box office.

In the matter of the fact, January box office usually remains cooler than usual following a busy Christmas season, while "Avatar: The way of water" would highly likely to receive a propitious window of opportunity this month to keep storming without presence of any potential competitor.
