In the upcoming film "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," set four years after the events of 2018's "Aquaman," the narrative dives deep into themes of vengeance, ancient lore, and mystical artifacts. Central to this unfolding drama is the character of Black Manta, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who swears to kill Aquaman in a quest fueled by revenge and dark alliances.

Black Manta's Quest for Vengeance

The story resumes with Black Manta, a pirate and mercenary, seeking to avenge his father's death, for which he holds Arthur Curry, the Atlantean king played by Jason Momoa, responsible.

In his pursuit, Manta finds an unlikely ally in King Kordax, a demonic entity from the depths of Atlantis's past.

"Free me from my prison and I will grant you the strength to kill the man who murdered your father," Kordax offers in the film's trailer, setting the stage for a dark alliance.

According to Abdul-Mateen's interview with DC Nation, Black Manta, after being rescued by Dr. Shin (Randall Park), has been assembling a team to fulfill his mission of finding and destroying Aquaman.
"He still has the hate, the passion, and the rage, but he needs more help," Abdul-Mateen explains.

This search for allies and Atlantean technology takes him across the globe, ultimately leading him to the Black Trident, a cursed weapon with a sinister history.

The Lost Kingdom and the Black Trident

The Black Trident, central to the plot of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," is a relic from Atlantis's murky history.

"The Black Trident is an ancient Atlantean relic. It comes from King Kordax, who's also the brother of King Atlan," Abdul-Mateen reveals.
The backstory of the trident is steeped in a familial power struggle, with Kordax forging the weapon through black magic after being denied the throne.

When Black Manta discovers the Black Trident, he becomes possessed by Kordax's evil spirit, turning him into a formidable adversary not just to Aquaman but to his entire bloodline. To unleash Kordax from his prison, Manta must target Aquaman's family, including his mother Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), and Aquaman's young son, the heir to the throne of Atlantis.
