Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic gave full credit to the Golden State Warriors for the defense they played on him in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Finals series. In Game 1 in San Francisco, the Warriors focused on stopping Doncic, thinking it would be the key to them claiming a victory.
The Warriors executed their defensive game plan perfectly as Doncic scored 20 points on a 6-of-18 shooting and also committed seven turnovers. Andrew Wiggins did an excellent job on Doncic as the Warriors claimed a comfortable 112-87 win in Game 1.
"They were doing a great job on me, especially in the second half," Doncic said, per ESPN. "But I think I've got to be better. That's on me. As a leader, I've got to be better for the whole group, so that's on me."
Doncic: Wiggins did a great job
At times, Wiggins was picking up Doncic full court. The Warriors' defense caught Doncic a bit off guard and he gave them credit after the game. "They did a really good job, Wiggins picking him up full court.
They were box-and-one, went zone. But they did a good job. Give them credit. Wiggins did a really good job. We understood coming into the series that we were going to see that. We'll go back and look at the video and see what we can do better."
The Mavericks scored just 87 points and hard to imagine anyone beating the Warriors with just 87 points scored. "It was an excellent defensive night overall," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "You know, we had the second-ranked defense in the league this year.
We take pride in our defense. Everybody sort of leans on Draymond [Green]. Draymond sets the tone for us. We had a good defensive night. But we can't let our guard down."
