Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss admits that LeBron James signing an extension is definitely "a big vote of confidence" ahead of the new season. This summer, James became eligible to sign a two-year, $97 million extension with the Lakers.
James took some time after becoming eligible, but he ultimately signed the extension. James, who turns 38 in December, proved last year that he's still one of the most dominant players in the NBA. The Lakers want James to retire as a Laker and him signing the extension is a positive sign that the Lakers' wish will be granted.
“It is a big vote of confidence when LeBron James signs a two-year extension, when he had many months to do so (he had until June 30, 2023, to sign this deal). And you know, it was a priority to us. It’s a priority to the Laker brand that he retire a Laker," Buss told Sam Amick of The Athletic.
James looking to bounce back this season
Since signing with the Lakers in 2018, James has managed to win one NBA title. Since winning the title in the bubble, the Lakers haven't had much success. A year ago, the Lakers exited the playoffs in the first round.
This past season, the Lakers finished with a 33-49 record and didn't even make the postseason. Following the Lakers' disappointing back-to-back seasons, some feared James might request a trade or not sign the extension.
But James still believes in the Lakers and is definitely not walking away from the team in the near future. This offseason, the Lakers haven't really made any splash moves. The Lakers have been trying to trade Russell Westbrook throughout the offseason, but so far their attemps have been unsuccessful.
It remains to be seen how will Lakers respond this season after a very disappointing 2021/22 campaign. As it stands now, James, Westbrook and Anthony Davis will get another chance to chase a ring together.
