An anonymous NBA executive thinks the Detroit Pistons should try to trade for Russell Westbrook. The Pistons are not really a team which has high expectations for this season and one Eastern Conference executive feels the Pistons could really benefit from trading for Westbrook and then moving on from him next summer.
The Pistons, who are in the rebuild mode, would likely acquire Westbrook and Lakers' draft capital if they were to agree to trade for the former NBA MVP. Also, the Pistons could use the trade to move veterans from their roster.
“I’d be willing to get involved if I were the Pistons,” the executive told Matt John of Heavy. “I would want that 2027 pick unprotected, and take back Russell Westbrook and send you all my veterans, all my junk.
Right now, Detroit is taking the approach of just waiting, playing with the guys they got from the Knicks, and trading during the season. That team needs to tank some more, they need (Victor) Wembanyama, or at least they need to be in the mix”.
The executive names players that could be used in the Westbrook trade
“Send back Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel and [Kelly] Olynyk and Kemba [Walker]. The Lakers would be doing a 1-for-4 deal there, so they’d have to move guys around.
You have some tradeable contracts, and you have some veterans you can use for depth. I’d consider it on both sides”. The Lakers have been trying to trade Westbrook since the start of the season. But Westbrook's $47 million contract for this season is a big problem as no team wants to pay that much a player who is coming off of a down year like Westbrook.
As the season is approaching, it seems more and more likely that the Lakers will end up keeping Westbrook. If that happens, the Lakers would have to find a role for Westbrook in which he could succeed.
