2022 NBA All-Star Game will be the 71st edition of the event. The game will be hosted by the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. This will be the third time that the Cleveland area will host the All-Star Game. The event will be televised by TNT for the 20th consecutive year.
But let's find out all about this city which will host one of the most followed sporting events ever for the third time.
Cleveland: between history and curiosity
Cleveland was founded in 1796 at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River and became an industrial center due to its location at the start of many waterways and railway lines.
With the decline of heavy industry, Cleveland has diversified its economy with financial services, insurance, and more. In 1837 the city, located on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River, went to war with neighboring Ohio City.
The latter remained independent until it was annexed to Cleveland in 1854. Situated as a meeting point between iron from Minnesota via the Great Lakes and coal and other ore from the south, the site eventually flourished. Cleveland became one of the most important centers in the USA both on an industrial and population level.
Standard Oil founder John Davison Rockefeller made his fortune here and in 1920 Cleveland became the fifth largest city in the US. Many Clevelanders are buried in the historic Lake View Cemetery, along with James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States.
In the aftermath of World War II, Cleveland experienced a brief boom. In sport, the Indians won the World Series in 1948 and the Browns dominated professional football in the 1950s. Business crowned Cleveland as the best place in the state.
In 1950 the city reached its peak with 914 808 inhabitants. According to 2018 data, the population reached 383 793 inhabitants, ranking 52nd in the USA and second in Ohio. Residents and tourists alike can benefit from the investments made by wealthy citizens in art, cultural institutions and philanthropy, which have enabled the creation of a large public library system.
Several investments in the twenty-first century have, however, allowed the creation and / or maintenance of various tourist attractions such as Progressive Field, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Playhouse Square Center.
According to studies done by The Economist in 2005, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are the cities where you find the best quality of life and the most suitable places to hold business meetings throughout the United States. Nonetheless, two different realities continue to clash in the city, with poverty concentrated in the suburbs, together with the difficulty in guaranteeing high quality public education.
