Quarterback Brock Purdy says being drafted last is a funny thing as he is excited to have a chance to prove himself in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers had the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft and they used it to select Purdy.
Purdy played college football at the Iowa State. The final pick of an NFL draft is titled "Mr. Irrelevant" but Purdy has no problems with that. "I think it's a funny thing," Purdy said, per ESPN. "If you're a fan, or even my family, friends and stuff, it's funny to laugh about it and joke around with it.
For me, I'm looking at it as an opportunity. I got my foot in the door, a team believed in me and now I get my opportunity to go and play football. That's what I want my career to be. That's what I want my job to be is to be an NFL quarterback and now I have the opportunity to do so.
That's how I'm looking at it. "From the outside looking in, I guess it's a funny thing and I'll embrace the role and have some fun with it for sure, but at the end of the day I'm trying to go and help a team win the Super Bowl.
That's where my mindset is at with it."
The 49ers selected Purdy for a reason
The 49ers moved up in the 2021 NFL draft to select quarterback Trey Lance. Lance spent the 2021 season learning under veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
The 49ers' plan for this offseason was to trade Garoppolo and name Lance their new starting quarterback. However, the 49ers haven't been able so far to find a trade partner for Garoppolo and he remains on the roster. Purdy has now joined Garoppolo and Lance in the 49ers' quarterback room. "He's relevant to us," 49ers general manager John Lynch said of Purdy.
