New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen has confirmed the team plans to have Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback in 2022. Winston, who spent the 2020 season being a backup to Drew Brees, beat out Taysom Hill for the starting quarterback spot last season.

Winston got off to a solid start to the 2021 season but then sustained a torn ACL injury in Week 7 versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This offseason, the Saints went hard after Deshaun Watson but the quarterback decided to sign with the Cleveland Browns.

The Saints' current plan is to start Winston at the quarterback spot, while Hill will likely be used mostly at the tight end position going forward.

Allen: We like what we have in Winston

“There’s a lot of days between now and Week One, but we certainly like where he’s at right now,” Allen said on the Rich Eisen Show, per Pro Football Talk.

“We like the progress that he’s making. Man, I really loved a lot of the things that he did last year for us — 14 touchdowns, three interceptions. There was just some really good stuff that you see. and my vision and my hope is that he continues to progress on the same level as he gets another year in the system”.

The Saints were 4-2 after the opening six games of the 2021 season. In Week 7, Winston suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury. The Saints won that game and improved to 5-2 but their results went downhill after the Winston injury and they ended up missing out on the playoffs.

Winston didn't play much last season but the Saints were happy with what they saw in those six and a half games he played. Winston previously played for the Buccaneers, who parted ways with him after they traded for Tom Brady.
