2012 receiving touchdowns leader James Jones has predicted a very bright future for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, saying that we are looking at a "bonafide superstar." In his rookie season, Lance made two starts but now he is expected to be the 49ers' full-time starting quarterback.
Jones, who played with Aaron Rodgers when he led the NFL in receiving touchdowns leader, thinks Lance could reach the heights of Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. “I believe we’re looking at a bonafide superstar, like Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers,” Jones said on NFL Network's Total Access.
“We had a small sample size of Aaron Rodgers, but all you heard out of the locker room and the people around Aaron was, ‘Just wait. You wait and see.’ That was the same thing for Patrick Mahomes, and that’s the same thing we’re hearing about Trey Lance”.
Lance tipped to have a great career
49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk shared some big words about Lance this offseason, calling him a "special quarterback." “I’ve seen a whole lot from him, especially since we’ve started this offseason program, how much he’s grown, just seeing him throw the football, leading the locker room, connecting with guys.
Yeah, we have a special quarterback," Aiyuk said of Lance. Lance showed flashes of his talent during his rookie season but also made some mistakes. However, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is not concerned as he also thinks they have a special talent in Lance.
"The biggest thing with Trey that people have to realize is he is younger," Shanahan said. "He has more horsepower inside of him than I think he even knows of. Just from the whole talent, but also what he's made of, how intelligent he is. I think he's going to be able to overcome adversity. I do believe he's going to handle this pressure."
