Vikings GM: Kirk Cousins is good but not Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah acknowledges the quarterback position is the most important one in the NFL and suggested they believe they have a quality quarterback in the name of Kirk Cousins. This offseason, the Vikings extended Cousins as they gave him a one-year, $35 million fully guaranteed contract.

Now, Cousins is tied to the Vikings through the 2023 season. "I'll be frank," Adofo-Mensah told USA Today, via CBS Sports. "The one asset where you get nervous about not burning it down is quarterback."

Vikings GM: Cousins is not Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes

Adofo-Mensah openly admitted that Cousins is not in the league of Brady or Mahomes but did it without trying to shade Cousins. "We don't have Tom Brady," Adofo-Mensah said.

"We don't have Pat[rick] Mahomes. "[The Super Bowl] is more likely to win if you have that quarterback. It's very unlikely to have that quarterback." After the Vikings missed out on the playoffs this past season, the team decided to fire coach Mike Zimmer and hire ex-Los Angeles Rams assistant Kevin O'Connell as their new head coach.

Recently, ex-Vikings linebacker Ben Leber suggested Zimmer didn't really like Cousins. "I think he's gonna finally thrive, really thrive, in a system and a coach that actually respects him," Leber said recently.

"I mean, It's not like I'm not breaking news here that Mike Zimmer did not like Kirk Cousins. And I think that showed in the way that Kirk behaved and the way that he carried himself. The team was never given to him, or he was never allowed to earn the trust of the team, because the head coach I think just didn't like him."

Before signing with the Vikings, O'Connell worked with the Rams as the offensive coordinator. O'Connell is a guru for offense and it will be interesting to see if he helps Cousins enjoy a big 2022 season.
