Damar Hamlin reveals commotio cordis caused his cardiac arrest on the field

Damar Hamlin revealed his cardiac arrest on the field was caused by commotio cordis and also revealed that he has been cleared to return to football activities. On January 2nd - during the Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals - Hamlin collapsed on the field after taking a strong hit.

Fortunately, the medical team made a quick reaction and administered life-saving CPR before Hamlin was transported to the nearby hospital. Since then, Hamlin has been making a remarkable recovery. This Tuesday, Hamlin provided more details to the media regarding the January 2nd incident and his NFL future.

Hamlin cleared to return to football

"I'm thankful and blessed. I'm blessed to have wonderful trainers here who treat me with the love and care as if I were their own children. This event was life-changing, but it's not the end of my story.

I'm here to announce that I plan on making a comeback to the NFL. The diagnosis of what happened to me was basically commotio cordis. It's a direct blow at a specific point in your heartbeat that causes cardiac arrest, and five to seconds later you fall out.

That's what everyone has seen back on January 2nd of this year. commotio cordis is the leading cause of (death for) athletes across all youth sports, so that's something I will be taking a step in to make a change. The awareness around CPR and the access to AEDs have been lowering that number as well," Hamlin said.

The Bills and Bengals game never resumed after the Hamlin incident. But in the divisional round of the playoffs, the Bills and Bengals met again - this time the game was played in Buffalo. Hamlin was in attendance during the divisional round as the entire Bills stadium welcomed their safety. Now that Hamlin has been allowed to resume football activities, he will likely play again in 2023.
