Cam Newton revealed he was absolutely stunned after once spending $17,000 on a rookie dinner. In the 2011 NFL draft, the Caroline Panthers used their first overall pick to draft Newton. The Panthers then gave Newton a four-year, $22 million deal.
After the season ended, Newton went out with his teammates for a rookie dinner. The dinner features steaks, wine bottles and champagnes - but Newton didn't expect the bill to be $17,000.
Newton on once spending $17,000 on a rookie dinner
“At the end of the year we had a rookie dinner, and I remember that because like damn they closed the restaurant.
They got some big a** steaks. I don’t even drink but that’s a big a** wine bottle and champagne. We sorry as hell, why the hell they getting all this stuff. And then they sent me that bill? Oh my goodness. Like as a rookie, when you getting that type of money, you still are mentally broke.
The tab, I think it was upwards of $17,000. I ain’t never spent that type of money in my life. But then I started hearing other stories like $50,000, $60,000 and this that and third, oh shoot I got away with murder," Newton said on his Funky Friday Clips podcast, per Total Pro Sports.
After being drafted as the first overall pick in 2011, Newton spent the next nine seasons with the Panthers. In 2015, Newton was named the NFL MVP and he also led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance. Unfortunately for Newton, his great 2015 season didn't conclude with a Super Bowl victory as the Panthers were beaten by the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl that season.
Newton played for the New England Patriots in 2020, before returning to the Panthers in 2021. Newton didn't do well in his second stint with the Panthers and the team didn't retain him for the 2022 season. Newton has been unsigned ever since the conclusion of the 2021 season.
