Private quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen reveals Trey Lance's throwing motion has been drastically changed this offseason and added the San Francisco 49ers quarterback now has a supporter in Patrick Mahomes. Lance entered this offseason determined to show the 49ers that they still have a reason to believe in him.
Lance hired Christensen, who had to understand what was the issue in his throws and then fix it. "Every day (of training) was a substantial jump," Christensen told The Athletic, via CBS Sports. Lance worked out alongside Mahomes, who loved what he was seeing from the 49ers quarterback.
"Pat really thinks the world of (Lance). He's just a really good person, conscientious. He wants to be great. And he's one of the few kids whose actions match his words. He backs it up. He shows up every day and he wants to learn.
And that's why I teach him," Christensen said.
Lance hopes for a big bounce-back season
Lance, the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft, didn't particularly impress in his rookie season but he was named the 49ers' starting quarterback for the 2022 season.
After a poor Week 1 performance in a loss to the Chicago Bears, Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Lance missed the remainder of the season and there were rumors about his future in San Francisco after the 2022 season ended.
"I'm all cleared, so I'm good to go. I got cleared a little over a month ago so I'm feeling really good and let's get back to work. Last year I played the one game in Chicago and then got hurt, so it was kind of over before it even got started.
But I am just excited for this year. This offseason, just focusing on getting better. Focusing on getting these guys better in the locker room and just being a great teammate, a great leader," Lance said in April.
