Saints HC Dennis Allen reveals how he feels about Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen already has a very high opinion of Derek Carr as he believes the veteran quarterback could make a difference in 2023. After nine seasons with the Raiders, Carr signed with the Saints after being released by his former team.

Since Dres Brees' retirement, the Saints started multiple quarterbacks and they also missed out on the playoffs in each of the last two years. Going into this year's offseason, the Saints' top priority was to sign a proven quarterback.

“Quarterback is the most important position on the field, and when you have a highly skilled player, a highly intelligent player, a guy that works the way the Derek does, a guy that has the type of leadership qualities that Derek has, that’s going to filter throughout the whole football team, players and coaches.

I think that gives you a lot of confidence going into the season," Allen said, via

Saints legend Brees welcomed the Carr signing

Throughout the 2022 season, Carr was pretty much receiving the most blame for the Raiders' play and losses.

But after Carr was released and signed with the Raiders, Saints legend Brees came to Carr's defense. “I think he caught the brunt of that unfairly, and I think you shoulder a lot of that burden as the quarterback anyway.

I think highly of him as a person. He’s shown the ability to execute complicated offenses where a lot is put on the quarterback position to be able to make checks and make reads very quickly. He’s proven that," Brees said in April.

Also in April, Brees suggested Carr could lead the Saints to a Super Bowl win. “We’ve seen just what a difference one position can make on a team. Look at what [Tom] Brady did for the Bucs. Obviously they brought in a lot of great players along with him, but that can change the complexion of things very quickly," Brees concluded.
