Sean Payton issues statement after stunning shade on Nathaniel Hackett

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has backtracked on his comments on Nathaniel Hackett, saying it was "a mistake" to say what he did. This week, USA Today published an interview with Payton, in which the current Broncos head coach absolutely shaded Hackett - who was the Broncos' head coach for the majority of the 2022 season.

Last offseason, the Broncos made some big moves and entered the 2022 season aiming for the Super Bowl. But instead, the Broncos were a disaster - finished with a 5-12 record - didn't even make the playoffs. Reflecting on Hackett's tenure with the Broncos, Payton said it "might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in NFL history." "Listen, I had one of those moments where I still had my FOX hat on and not my coaching hat on.

I said this to the team in the meeting yesterday, we've had a great offseason relative to that. I've been preaching that message, and here I am, the veteran, stepping in it. It was a learning experience for me, it was a mistake, obviously.

I need a little bit more filter," Payton said, via NFL Media.

Payton's comments about Hackett went viral

Hackett now works as the offensive coordinator with the New York Jets and he is no longer associated with the Broncos in any way.

When Payton decided to publicly call out Hackett's 2022 job with the Broncos, that left surprised even some of those from within the NFL community. "They can only beat the (expletive) out of you so much. But everybody's got a little stink on their hands.

It's not just Russell [Wilson]. It was a [poor] offensive line. It might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL. That's how bad it was," Payton told USA Today. One thing is for sure - there will be lots of attention when the Broncos and Jets meet in Week 5.
